Fit in Laughter for the Spring Semester

By Daisy Le on February 17, 2017

It’s halfway through the funny month of February and perhaps you feel so bombarded with a busy study session that you forgot to enjoy the sunshine this morning and even skipped the breakfast run.

You dread the busiest of Mondays and you are wishing the week was already over so you can enjoy your weekend after doing all of your homework and wondering what errand to run first. Does this sound like you on a regular basis?

If your answer to that question is yes or even halfway up the stairs to yes, I need for you to divide your time so that you can fit this piece of advice in for a few minutes to focus on making a new commitment this week. This new commitment involves spreading laughter to your fellow classmates as your random acts of kindness and ultimately ending the day by laughing at yourself.

This also will make you smile each morning and evening before you doze off.  There is no time better than today to begin such a simple and funny challenge. Choose humor as an essential in your personal wellness plans. Choose laughter as a tool to keeping your daily dose of happiness in tip top shape!

If you are not already a planner or checklist addict, here is a list of simple tips to spread more good vibes and humor throughout your day to those around you and to learn to smile and learn to laugh more yourself.

How do you know that you are making someone’s day including your own if you don’t crack a smile for yourself first thing as you go through your morning routine?! You know it’s good for you and may ease some bodily stress anyway. There were times in college I was so stressed I think I went two days at a time without smiling. I realized it was rather odd for me to try to learn to be happier and promote positivity if I completely went through two consecutive busy days without a smile being scheduled in. Ridiculously funny, right?!

So you’re prepping for class this morning after studying your notes or have made it to the classroom early and ready for class to begin. Try to make a big push to be the ultimate ice breaker in the class and start off by saying “good morning!” Then, ask your colleague a random question that’ll get their brain flowing and entertain them until class starts, such as a trivia question. “Jeopardy” on campus anyone?!

The next suggestion involves very little effort but still provides a large body image statement. Instead of wearing your typical black pair of socks from work, change into funny socks and accessories such as funny tees for class! This action can result in being a great mood changer after a long day of work and refreshing for students who are currently taking long classes. These are what you call conversational pieces of attire that are bound to start a silly conversation.

There is so much dramatic script being placed in our movies and sarcastic jokes these days in our favorite sitcoms. As a new generation, some of us may want to shy away from the movies, music, televisions, and concert arenas for fear we may find something else more enlightening with our precious time. Instead of avoiding the movie report to be created, or falling asleep while the class movie is on, pay attention and predict the outcome. Pretend there was a sequel to the class movie you just watched for your analysis report.

Next, you can choose to be the class clown for the day and make funny silly statements to share with your ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’.  Keep in mind to keep the jokes appropriate and near the very end of the class and say something extra silly that the class will remember before they head to the next class. This too can serve as an icebreaker and can possibly start new friendships for next class!

In between classes, several students can be seen on their phones checking messages and email. Why not schedule in a silly selfie with your favorite colleague and make a simple memory? Chances are you are using your phone for several conversations and using the mirror image to tame your hair flyaways. Grab a friend instead and take a #SillySelfie before the next class. Use social media outlets to tag your friends and leave a comment below on this article with the fun picture that you have made the personal and private pledge to being the funny one this spring semester!

As long as the jokes are appropriate, go all out in your workplace and classes! Your peers will adore you for your randomness which happens to always win and the random acts of kindness will be deeply appreciated.

Spread Dove chocolates since they have funny statements. Create silly sayings of your own and distribute these funny messages out for the remainder of the month. You’ll just need a snack pack, pens, and some cute sticky notes that you can use to create personalized doodles for your favorites.

Have fun building on funny times this spring semester and share it with your newspaper or publication on campus. Spread more humor because it’s funny, healthy, a great break from the books, adds to the campus good vibes, and really shapes the overall college experience!
